Wildlife Viewing

Yes, we have wildlife. But you must remember that Alaska is a huge, unpopulated state. The wildlife is free to wander as they wish. Sometimes they will be where you can see them. Sometimes they prefer a little privacy. Wildlife sightings are rarely guaranteed. Here are some ideas for the best opportunities:

Denali National Park

Denali Park offers a variety of bus tours and Park Service shuttle buses to take you inside the park. Early summer is the best time for viewing wildlife near the road. Later in the season you may need binoculars. While we cannot promise or predict when wildlife will show, the tour allows plenty of opportunity to look for Dall sheep, moose, caribou, wolves, and grizzly bears.

Tracy Arm, Juneau

A day cruise takes you into this narrow, twisting, turning fjord with spectacular scenery, two tidewater glaciers, and plentiful wildlife.

Pack Creek, Juneau

Anan Bear Observatory, Wrangell

A short boat ride and a 30 minute walk over uneven terrain to the bear viewing platforms. Mid-June to mid-August is prime bear viewing time.

Katmai & Brooks Falls, Anchorage

As many as fifty bears can be viewed fishing along the mile and a half long Brooks River during the peak of the salmon season.

Pribilof Islands, Anchorage

A bird-lovers paradise that is also well known for an abundant fur seal population, this is the ultimate wildlife tour from Anchorage.

Whale Watching, Gustavus
